The first step to selecting which mobile or broadband supplier you should use

As part of the Community Plan we are going to run a series of workshops to help residents find and choose the best mobile and broadband services for their own needs. The workshops have been delayed by the events of Covid-19 but are still going to take place as soon as circumstances allow.

This is obviously a big topic but the first step everyone must take is to look at the state of the current provision. The simplest way is to use the Offcom Coverage Checker (linked at the bottom of this post). It is very simple to use and will give you a good idea of the quality of the mobile coverage (voice and data) and broadband (exact address details) for everyone.

The Offcom checker is the first thing to use. It will narrow your choice down to only those suppliers who can give you the level of service you would like. After that there will be a range of schemes and offers to assess. For some people there will be no off-the-shelf solution and alternatives will need to be sought but please check what is already there as the first step.

As a final note on this post; we live in a gloriously varied landscape - which is pretty much the worst enemy of atmospheric radio wave transmission! Local problems will occur; dips and hollows, shadows from hills, proximity to water and lovely old houses with four-feet thick, stone walls, even a big tree near the building can cause deterioration of signal strength. It is quite possible to be in an area of "good" service but have local conditions that prevent you receiving a "good" service. This is something which will have to be worked around but there is usually a solution, although in some cases it may require additional expense to achieve the service you want.

THIS NEXT BIT IS VERY IMPORTANT IN MAKING THE DECISION ABOUT WHICH SERVICES YOU SUBSCRIBE TO

The maps show the full range of suppliers and their services. Not all suppliers have the same level of service and service can vary over small distances. If your current supplier does not have a good level of service you need to switch to one who does - it doesn't matter how much you pay or what package you sign up to

YOU WILL ONLY GET A GOOD LEVEL OF SERVICE FROM A SUPPLIER IF IT SHOWS IT TO BE SO ON THE MAP, SO CHOOSE ONE OF THOSE SUPPLIERS.

This is just a potted version of part of what we plan to run in the workshops and we'll make a few more posts on this topic soon. For the present, we hope that it will help anyone suffering from poor service to start to look for a better solution.
