Position Statement – Currently Proposed Lake District National Park Extension

20th May 2021

During Initial Discussions which took place prior to the formation of the Copeland GDF Working Group it was recognised that a proposal had been submitted to Natural England in 2019 for a southern extension to the Lake District National Park.

At launch the Copeland GDF Working Group stated1:

“The Copeland GDF Working Group will initially consider the whole of the Borough of Copeland and adjacent inshore area up to 22km from the coastline, with the exclusion of the area within the boundary of the Lake District National Park and any future extension”.

In response to recent questions the Working Group has recognised a need to clarify this statement on the proposed extension of the park and wishes to confirm that the area within the proposed extension is being excluded from further consideration.

To help clarify this, the title of the original Initial Evaluation Report for this area, that pre-dated the formation of the Working Group, will be updated to remove an earlier reference to a named location within that area (Ghyll Scaur Quarry).

The Copeland GDF Working Group website will also be updated with the following map, which is intended to make this exclusion clearer.

The Working Group remains keen to engage with local stakeholders interested in finding out more about the GDF siting process and engaging in dialogue.
